This is a tale of fratricidal Columbian drug gangsters and the women who love them.Once upon a time the Barrag ns and Monsalves were cousins and friends and shared their criminal enterprise But then Nando Barrag n killed Adriano Monsalve in a drunken barroom fight over the widow Bracho, what the French would call cherchez la femme, and the two sides of the family began an almost ritualized series of revenge killings Prolific breeder

Leopard in the Sun was a real treat, and I think magic realist fiction enthusiasts will enjoy it After reading the first sentence on the dust jacket, I couldn t wait to devour this one Imagine the Sicilian history of The Godfather rewritten by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, or West Side Story reinterpreted by Isabel Allende, and you have a sense of Laura Restrepo s unforgettable novel of the making of Colombia s drug cartels I couldn t have said it be

i can t believe i finished this book maybe it was a bad translation, but the writing was bad and the technique of, i don t know, modern day greek chorus, that she used was unbearable i am in colombia and read it for a book group and everyone agreed skip it.

I bought this at a library sale last summer, not knowing really what it was Just seemed like a theme I didn t know much about Stylistically this was not my taste whatsoever While I can t seem to put down a book without finishing it, I was resolved at the halfway mark to toss it in the trash when I finished rather than inflict it on another person Then the completely immoral and, lets face it, evil main characters began to show signs of actual humanity Be

Super good book it really connects with me The book is about two Colombian families name the Monsalves and the Barraganes, both families are in the drug dealer business and they both want to kill each other only because they are opponents in their business Inside each family, we can see how women don t make decisions in the business or in the family Also, its a book where love and feelings are not important at the moment dealing with the drug business.

The beginning is like something straight out of Scarface the pock marked gangster and the beautiful woman he s always wanted are sitting at the bar when a rival enters, yells something about revenge for something that happened 20 years ago, and opens fire Bullets whizz, people dive for cover, the gangster and his girlfriend are riddled with no wait, he s the only one who gets shot, killing women isn t honourable No wait, he s shot, but only wounded And besides, it was

I have read other books by Restrepo and found this difficult to read and appreciate In part, all of the characters are so awful as they are supposed to be Alina Jerico wife of one of the bad guys is an exception to this, as is the lawyer who in the end rescues Alina There are beautiful details in the book and sadly it does reflect the life of families involved in drug deals and drug wars in many countries So, yes, you should read it Slowly.

Excellent I don t usually go for violence, or for feuding drug lords, but this book is really good The author s writing style is fabulous, and I definitely plan to check out other things she has written.
